Opened in 1995, this Johnny Miller and Chi Chi Rodriguez design
is a target golfer’s dream. Three nines are available at the
Badlands: the Desperado, the Outlaw and the Diablo. Each nine is
considered one of the toughest in Las Vegas golf.
“This course is demanding but fair,” explained PGA
head Professional Jeff Levin. “The original nines are 50%
fairway and 50% natural terrain and you have to be careful where
you hit your shots. The new nine, The Outlaw Nine, is a lot wider
and funnels your shots back to the fairways. We get a lot of repeat
players who come back here just to conquer our course.”
No nine is much easier or difficult than the next and each is
a par 36. However, four sets of tees on each make the layout playable
for beginners and pros alike. The Outlaw nine’s finishing
hole is devilish: the 511-yard par 5 is reachable only if the approach
can carry water in front of the green.
Even if the course is one of the toughest in Las Vegas, it’s
still easy to digest due to the breathtaking scenery, which will
most likely be much more inviting to the eye than your scorecard.
Deep-flowing arroyos, canyons and natural washes surround this desert
treasure.
The Nike Golf Learning Center and Ken Venturi Academy are both
located at the Badlands’ full-service practice facility and
lessons can be included in golf packages.
Badlands was voted 1997 Best of Las Vegas by the Review Journal
Readers’ Poll, and was ranked among the 1997 Top Ten Best
Golf Courses in Nevada by Golf Digest.
